Team profile

Brazil

Brazil has been one of the most successful teams in world volleyball history and part of this success is a result of a long-term project developed with the younger national teams such as the boys’ U19 team. In the Boys’ U19 World Championship, the South Americans’ hard work brought home seven medals – six gold medals and a silver medal. They have also 16 continental championship titles. The Brazilian youngsters are up for another challenge to be among the top teams in the world under mentor Percy Oncken.

Percy Oncken

Percy Oncken has been working with the youngest Brazilian talents since 1993, when he debuted and took the gold medal at the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship in Turkey. He then kept the South Americans’ domain for three editions in 1995, 2001 and 2003, while they finished as runners-up in 2005. After these stints, he transferred to the men’s U21 team and accomplished to win the age group World Championship in 2007 and 2009, then returned to the U19 age group in 2011. In the 2013 edition in Mexico, Percy’s team did not perform as expected and ended in fifth place. With Percy still manning the Brazilian bench, Brazil are eyeing on its seventh gold medal in this age group.
