Mexico edge continental rivals Cuba in four close sets

Resistencia, Argentina, August 17, 2015 - Mexico’s dream run in Argentina went even further on Monday when they subdued NORCECA rivals Cuba by 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22), securing a place among the tournament’s best 16 teams.

Captain Ridel Garay Nava continued to be the Mexican heart as he uncorked a competition-high 29 points, shining in all departments of the game. Bruno Cruz was the other major offensive weapon, with 15 tallies, and the team as a whole did great in blocking, stopping Cuba by a 15-5 margin.

Powerful Miguel Ángel López led the losing side with 24 points, but he just found the way through the Mexican blockers from the third set onwards. Ismel Pelayo followed his tracks with 15 kills, while all other Cuban players remained on single digits.

Mexico has already finished their Pool B agenda, with 6 points and a 2-2 campaign. Cuba currently stands fourth with half of that number, but they can improve on Tuesday against last-ranked Egypt.
