Round of 16 almost complete at FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship

 

Resistencia and Corrientes, Argentina, August 17, 2015 - Many questions are beginning to be answered after Day 4 at FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship in Resistencia and Corrientes. Home team Argentina, USA, China, Mexico, Poland, Iran, Russia and Brazil were Monday’s winners and they are all moving forward, as well as Bulgaria, Germany and Italy. Only a handful of spots for Round of 16 are left open and those will be decided on a thrilling Tuesday.

It was another test for home boys Argentina at Monday’s last game, one where they had to regain calm and control. Setter Micah Ma’a aced four times, towering Scott Stadick added six blocks and Kyle Ensing snatched 20 shots.

With another astonishing performance of outside hitter Yu Yuantai, China walked past Egypt 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 25-15) and gathered another three points that carry them to the next round. Tireless Yu performed at his best with 21 points and a solid 68% on spiking, and he also was vital to vanish four set ball for Egypt in the second set.

Mexico’s dream run in Argentina went even further on Monday when they subdued NORCECA rivals Cuba by 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22), also securing a place among the tournament’s best 16 teams. Captain Ridel Garay Nava continued to be the Mexican heart as he uncorked a competition-high 29 points.

In Corrientes, Poland came back after their rest day and Chile couldn’t leave a good image facing them. The Poles built their victory 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-23) with an incredible demonstration by Bartosz Kwolek, who collected as much points from service than attacking, to end as the top scorer with 13.

Afterwards, Iran almost finished Chinese Taipei’s aspirations of advancing to the next round with a convincing 3-0 triumph (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) in a match that barely passed the 63 minutes of gameplay. Chilean players and coaching staff stayed to watch the show and celebrate a vital result for them.

After the break, Russia managed to contain Puerto Rico’s final onslaught to crown a straight-set victory (25-15, 25-20, 25-23) with a neat performance by opposite Dmitry Yakovlev. The Caribbean still couldn’t win in this World Championship and have only one life to try getting into the tournament‘s best 16 teams.

In the last shift, Brazil subdued Japan in three sets betting on Martins De Pinho’s quick arm for a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-17). A fine team performance allowed them to remain unbeaten in Pool D after 3 presentations. Daniel Martins De Pinho shined with 18 points and 65% spiking efficiency for Brazil’s win.
