Following his stint as national team player for England and Great Britain in the 1990’s, Joel played professionally in Belgium from 1998 to 2003 before starting his career as a professional coach in 2007. Joel started coaching in Division-level teams in Belgium in 2004 and won provincial and division titles in 2005 and 2006, before joining Great Britain’s Olympic volleyball team as assistant coach in 2007. During his term as assistant coach for the Great Britain programme, Joel coached in the Euro League, European Championship and World Championship Qualification Tournaments, World University Games and the London 2012 Olympic Games. Between 2010 and 2012, Joel combined his role with the national team of Great Britain and head coach of a professional club in the Netherlands, which won the Super Cup and the Dutch League title. He also served as coach of Great Britain after the London 2012 Olympic Games.
After a short spell as director of an elite sport academy in Bournemouth, United Kingdom, Joel returned to high performance coaching in August 2013. He currently works for Vlaamse Volleyball Federation as head coach of their junior men’s programme, which combines working with 14 to 18 junior players in school and performance coaching with the junior men’s national team.
