Italy

The Italian boy’s U19 national team earned top honours at the European Championship in Puchov and the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship in Bahrain under coach Fausto Polidori in 1997. In 1995, they took silver medals at the European Championship and U19 World Championship, and most recently, the 2015 European Championship under coach Mario Barbiero. The Italian squad also won bronze at both editions of the European Championship in 2003 and 2005, and eventually grabbed bronze in the 2005 U19 World Championship.

Mario Barbiero

Mario Barbiero was born on April 31, 1958, in the town of Velletri in the Italian capital of Rome. He earned a degree in Sports Science and became an instructor at the Italian Volleyball Federation. Barbiero spearheads the coaching staff of the boys’ U19 and U17 Italian squads. The bronze medals at the European Championship and World Championship in 2005, the silver medal at the European Championship in 2015 are among Barbiero’s main achievements. The Italian coach also led his team to gold medal finishes at the European WEWZA in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015, and a bronze medal finish at the EYOF in Tbilisi this year.
